Zonta International’s story is woven from a rich fabric of empowerment and progressive change. During a time when women were rarely in leadership positions, Marian de Forest, founder of Zonta, conceived the idea of an organization that would bring together women in executive positions, to break through the "glass ceiling". On 8 November 1919, in Buffalo, Zonta was founded as a service organization of executive women working to improve the status of women worldwide. Today, Zonta International is a global organization of more than 28,000 members in nearly 1,200 Zonta clubs in 61 countries. In 2019, we celebrated our 100th anniversary and the milestones that made us the organization we are today.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most pervasive human rights violations and a global epidemic. It knows no national or cultural barriers; it takes place at home, in the workplace and in open spaces, and affects millions of women and girls in peacetime and conflict. It includes psychological, physical and sexual violence, and rape, female genital cutting, child marriage and human trafficking.
All Zonta clubs and districts are encouraged to take part in the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign and take local, national and international actions to influence the making and implementation of laws, as well as changing gender-based attitudes and behaviors to end violence against women.
